This is how Accumulation, a novel written by Buan Boonaca could be explained, in the shortest possible way. The character that is going through the process of “accumulation’’ and change is “named’’ Cam. One night, one tattoo will change his life forever. What do these tattoos mean? Why did they start appearing all over his body?
What I like most about this novel is how the author managed to create a mixture of horror, the thriller in some way and a criticism of the modern society. There are not many books of this combination of genre, which only adds more to the overall quality. Horror. Thriller. Modern society. Secret tattoos. The secret meaning behind them. I like It. 5/5.
Accumulation is a very unique story. It doesn't really hold that many scares in it, but it is scary at the same time. I think that fans of horrors and thrillers will both enjoy this story because of the elements from both that end up in the pages. The narrative is well put together and moves along at a steady pace. The editing was also done very well and the final product is finely polished. The cover art had me confused at first until I got into the story, then it suddenly made perfect sense so great job to the cover designer as well. I would have liked to see some more action that would have driven the story along at a faster pace, but this was done well enough that it was able to stand without it.
I loved the idea behind this story. It was so unique and different from any other book I have read. From the start of it, it just pulled me in. Cam is the type of protagonist we love to hate, with his toxic masculinity and crude behavior, without many redeeming qualities. I was really intrigued by the mystery, but honestly didn't care about Cam. He went from incredibly shallow to incredibly deep in a way that didn't suit his character to me.
"I didn't do anything...This is who I am now." I was a bit shocked how easily Cam took on his new life and role without much of a fight. Instead of balking against it, he threw himself into his new identity. It was an interesting juxtaposition between running away from yourself, loss of control, change, and acceptance.
The random dropping of movie and tv show names got really old fast. It took me out of the story and made me question whether or not the author had made a bar bet at some point to see just how many of them he could insert into the story. I kept thinking they would weave into the story in a deeper way. If you look at them allegorically, you could tie them in, but they didn't fell like they fit to me.
This story was great for me, until the second half where it goes from the mystery of the tattoos to a spirit journey. I loved many of the metaphors and ideas behind the tattoos and the skin-deep, visual surface of the world and our past experiences. The spiritual journey blasted this story to a metaphysical level I was not anticipating and that didn't feel like it jived with the rest of the book in some ways. Overall, I liked it though.
I felt like the author truly made the characters real with his excellent conversations. The story pace is pretty much steady with a quick pickup in the downward spiral once the tattoos started showing up on Cam's face. I was hoping that we would find out why the tattoos started showing up all over his body. I was even more curious about the strange blackouts where he had some seriously embarrassing moments. My only dislike was it sometimes hard to tell if what Cam was experiencing was real or all in his head. Overall, good urban read about what happens when someone stops living for other's expectations and living true to self.
